New Michelin Guide Rouge Awards Copenhagen a Total of 15 Stars
The 2013 edition of the Michelin Guide Rouge has awarded Copenhagen’s restaurants a total of 15 stars, a record high for Copenhagen. The fully organic restaurant, Geranium, was awarded its 2nd Michelin giving the city two two-star restaurants.
A total of 15 Michelin stars to 13 restaurants have been awarded to the city of Copenhagen in 2013 – which is more than any other Scandinavian city. The newcomer to receive a Michelin star in Copenhagen is the restaurant Kadeau.
Copenhagen has become a global food Mecca: restaurant noma, the pioneer of New Nordic Cuisine, was awarded first one then two stars in the Michelin Guide, and has been named the World’s Best Restaurant World’s by UK’s Restaurant Magazine in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The city also has some of the world’s best chefs and Northern Europe’s biggest food festival, Copenhagen Cooking.
Rebecca Burr from The Michelin Guide Rouge Rouge told Danish newspaper, Politiken, on March 10: “When I think back to some of my early visits (to Copenhagen), I was blown away by the standard. I think that the Michelin guide was among the first to realize how high the standard was there. But it didn't have such good everyday places. Now people who buy the guide can spend a couple of days in Copenhagen and visit a much larger range of good places, bistros and brasseries and gourmet restaurants…”
Bib Gourmand – Good Value for Money
The Michelin Guide is not just about stars, it also awards the Bib Gourmand, a special category for great restaurants which are more affordable and deliver particularly good value for money. This year, Copenhagen’s restaurants were awarded a total of 13 Bib Gourmands, compared to 12 in the last edition.
In restaurants such as Marv & Ben and Søren K, you can sample New Nordic cuisine without having to reach for your gold card. A number of the Bib Gourmand awarded restaurants have chefs who have previously worked at noma.
Former noma sommelier, Anders Selmer, is behind the restaurant Kødbyens Fiskebar in the meat packing district where he serves elegant, modern fish and seafood dishes in the funky, post-industrial setting of a former butcher's wholesalers. Meanwhile, Restaurant Orangeriet is a more classically-orientated restaurant, serving refined Franco-Danish food and new to receive a Bib Gourmand is brasserie style restaurant Retour.
Northern Europe’s biggest food festival
Also becoming internationally renowned is Copenhagen Cooking, Northern Europe’s biggest food festival. The festival has something for everyone, from new Nordic cuisine and gourmet restaurants at low prices, to food markets and countless other events all over the city.
Both international guests and Danes visit the festival and in 2012, Copenhagen Cooking attracted more than 100,000 dining guests.
This year’s Copenhagen Cooking will be the ninth edition. It runs from August 23 – September 1, 2013, while the fourth winter edition will be held in February 2014.

Pictured: Kadeau started as a restaurant on the south coast of Bornholm - now a new restaurant at Christianshavn is opened. The philosophy behind Kadeau Copenhagen is the same as Kadeau Bornholm: “To produce and serve food from Bornholm and the Nordic regions and wines that, as far as possible, come from sustainable wine farmers that love their wines as much as we love food. We love food, and we love Bornholm”. The ingredients are produced at the island and the food is presented on ceramic ware, glass, wood boards, and beach rocks from Bornholm.
