The City of Stockholm has been working for some time to identify an external party to take over ownership of Stockholmsmässan. A key requirement has been that any transfer must be to an actor with a clear and long-term plan for developing the entire operation. Several interested parties have taken part in the process, but given the current market conditions, it has proven difficult to find a buyer who meets the city’s requirements. The sales process has now been discontinued, and the city will instead continue to develop Stockholmsmässan under its own management.
Stockholmsmässan is the largest exhibition and congress centre in the Nordic region and plays a vital role in Stockholm’s visitor economy. The exhibition and congress operations will therefore continue to be developed to maintain Stockholmsmässan’s position as a leading venue for innovation, business development and cultural exchange.
“We look forward to continuing to develop and improve our venue in Älvsjö together with the City of Stockholm, with the aim of offering more exciting and inspiring events and congresses,” says Staffan Ingvarsson, CEO of Stockholmsmässan.
Stockholmsmässan to Remain in Älvsjö Until at Least 2034
A consultation document titled Programme for Älvsjödalen, published on 7 May 2025, states that Stockholmsmässan will remain at its current location until a new site has been identified. The document also notes that the new metro line is not expected to become operational until 2035. It is only at that point that physical development of the area, in line with the consultation plans, can begin. As a result, Stockholmsmässan will be able to continue its operations in Älvsjö for many years to come, at present, at least until 2034.
