The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has announced a new partnership with GDS, Global Destination Sustainability movement and the launch of a knowledge development initiative on sustainability, according to Conference & Meetings World.

ICCA believes it is vital for the meetings industry to take an active role in developing and implementing sustainable event strategies that are of the highest standards and fully aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).

“Through knowledge and co-operation we can achieve excellence, not only in our own sustainable event practices, but also in global sustainability initiatives,” the association said in its message to members.

ICCA added that the new partnership served to support its members as they created and implemented sustainability changes, reported on impacts, and communicated stories that could catalyse action within the industry. “By accessing the expertise of GDS, our members can ensure they meet the increasing demands for sustainable events and develop innovative strategies that will help our industry drive the global sustainability movement,” the association said.

One immediate benefit of this partnership is the possibility for ICCA members to register for the GDS Academy and earn the GDS – ICCA Certificate in Regenerative Destination Management. ICCA is inviting its members to attend the GDS Academy launch, 9 June, to find out how their organisations may benefit from the ICCA-GDS partnership.

Taking part in the GDS Academy launch will be Guy Bigwood, Chief Changemaker, GDS-Movement; Senthil Gopinath, CEO, ICCA; Genevieve Leclerc, co-Founder & CEO, Meet 4 Impact and Graeme Jackson, head of strategic partnerships, The Travel Foundation.
